APINOVAR

Integrated Pest Management Bottom Board
Key Tool In An Integrated Pest Management Strategy Against Varroa

APINOVAR has been designed to make IPM easy and efficient. First, APINOVAR is a powerful information tool. It enables you to know and predict at any time the infestation level of your bee colonies. APINOVAR also gives you access to the best method of treatment: the "flash" method of application for formic acid. "Flash" is the fastest, cheapest and most efficient way of using formic. On top of that APINOVAR directly supports the bee in its combat against varroa by respecting and supporting its grooming behaviour. APINOVAR is the key to a natural and highly efficient method of controlling varroa in even the largest bee operations. Comes with APINOVAR a fully developed IPM system resulting from solid research and experience. We are proud to be able to offer the APINOVAR solution to the beekeeping community.

Working with APINOVAR means seeing ahead and being in full control of the situation. Stop going blind. Stop being nervous about varroa.

Monitoring and APINOVAR

Monitoring is essential in a successful IPM strategy. Sampling by the natural drop of the mites is the most sensitive monitoring method. This is the only method than can be used to predict future mites levels. Natural drop sampling with APINOVAR is faster, cheaper, and even more accurate. It is also fun.

  • It is not necessary to protect the sampling carton with a screen.
  • Simple vegetable grease can be used as sticky material. Using a paint roller is a very fast way of preparing your reusable sticky boards.
  • Using the side-opening sampling drawer, installing or collecting the sticky boards is done swiftly and smoothly without disturbing the colonies and without getting stung.
  • Long sampling periods are possible for better sensitivity at low infestation level.
  • Moreover, the screen surface is maximized to cover 98% of the total surface of the base. Sampling results will really reflect actual infestation level.

Treatments and APINOVAR

Flash application of formic in conjunction with APINOVAR presents great advantages.

  • The formic acid can be applied rapidly and safely via the sampling drawer of APINOVAR without even opening the hive. When a drench gun is used to deliver the acid, whole yards can be treated in a matter of minutes.
  • No need to use any support material other that paper towels. This means important year after year savings for you. No need either for other special equipment.
  • APINOVAR makes better use of the formic vapours. Flash on APINOVAR is almost twice as efficient. Also, as opposed to slow release application methods, you will find very little variations in efficiency between individual colonies. Flash on APINOVAR delivers the level of efficiency that one only expects from a commercial synthetic pesticide (94% and more).
  • Flash is also a very versatile treatment. Its short duration makes it suitable as a mid-season treatment. Both dosage and number of applications can be adapted to suit the bees need and the prevailing conditions. It can be used to treat one or two brood chamber colonies without any risk and maintaining the same level of efficiency.

With APINOVAR treatments with conventional pesticides are also more efficient. Mites that have been weakened but not killed by the treatment fall through the screen and are eliminated. As a consequence, the apparition of resistance in the mite population is retarded.

APINOVAR is a high quality product than provides many other advantages. It meets the needs of most beekeeping operations.

  • The absence of a solid bottom allows for increased ventilation when needed:
    • for moving bees
    • for moving closed nucs
    • for wintering (no humidity on the floor)
  • It can be used with any type of hive placement. It will suit palletised operations.
  • It can be piled crosswise for easy storage and transportation.
  • Its sampling drawer slides smoothly no matter what the humidity. It can be pulled out easily using a hive tool.
  • It is sturdy and very light. The total weight including the sampling tray is only 1.9 kilos. APINOVAR is actually sturdier than a standard bottom board: it will not come apart.
  • it is more durable than a standard bottom board. Its airy design prevents the accumulation of hive debris that retain humidity and cause rotting. The high quality of the galvanized screen we use, and the way we protect its edges, prevent it from rusting. Furthermore, the whole bottom board is paraffin dipped to make it last longer. A broken screen can easily be replaced. Stainless steel is available as an option.

Trough our long experience, we found solutions to the numerous technical difficulties involved in the fabrication of such a product. Potential corrosion of screen, warping or swelling of the wood, infiltration of water or bees into the sampling tray and insufficient protection of the wood are only a few of the numerous problems that one has to face when building such a product. Large scale fabrication gives us access to the best prices for the materials and to sophisticated and highly efficient equipments. We are happy to let you take advantage of all this. Think of it before you start building your own. Too often beekeepers engaging into the adventure of self building have to live with an end product they do not like to work with. Furthermore, they do not find the expected economy. APINOVAR is a top quality product and we accept the challenge of offering it at the lowest possible price. It is made in Canada. In many provinces the purchase of APINOVAR is eligible for funding as sampling equipment under specific government programs intended to encourage the implementation of IPM and good environmental practices at the farm. EFP program in Ontario and CMFSP program in Manitoba are examples of such programs. Check in your own province.
